Study finds that more sex equals better sleep

Let’s be honest—most of us have heard (or experienced!) the idea that a little bedroom fun can help you drift off to sleep.

It’s been one of those “old wives’ tales” passed around for generations.

But until now, it’s mostly been based on gut feeling and personal stories rather than hard science.

That’s changing, thanks to new research from Central Queensland University and Flinders University in Australia.

Scientists decided to put this age-old wisdom to the test, tracking couples over several nights to see what really happens when you have sex or masturbate before bed.

They used actual sleep monitors—not just surveys—to measure the effects.

What the scientists found

On nights when people had sex (with a partner or solo), they fell asleep faster and spent less time tossing and turning.

After partnered sex, people were awake just 16 minutes on average during the night, compared to 23 minutes on nights without any sexual activity.

Even better, their “sleep efficiency”—the percentage of time in bed actually spent sleeping—increased from 91.5% to 93.4%.

And get this: even though people went to bed about half an hour later after sex, it didn’t cut into their total sleep time.

In fact, the next morning, they reported feeling more refreshed, motivated, and ready to tackle the day.

Even cuddling helps

Another cool discovery? Couples who shared a bed—even if they didn’t have sex—had their REM sleep cycles sync up.

Just cuddling up next to your partner might help your sleep patterns align, which is a sweet bonus for anyone who loves a good snuggle.

So, while we’ve all kind of “known” that sex helps you relax and sleep, this study finally gives us the scientific proof.

The improvements might not be huge, but they’re real—and they add up!

About 75% of people in other studies also say they sleep better after sex or orgasm, and most would even pick it over a sleeping pill.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a natural way to sleep better and wake up with a smile, science says a little intimacy before bed could be just what the doctor ordered. Sweet dreams, everyone! 😉
